The art feeds of matches, echo chambers, influences, claimed or not. Every artist is preceded by elders, teachers and in turn generates disciples. Every year since 2013, Olympus revitalizes this eternal dialogue by offering three great names of contemporary photography to sponsor three young graduates of the National School of Photography in Arles. The idea of this “exchange of views” arose from the Olympus complicity with the Arles School of which he is a loyal partner for many years.
This photographic dialogue is based on a simple principle: from a corpus of fifteen works proposed by each of the “referents”, students must produce images in response. This bold paris protocol takes on the future. It puts next works done and those teachers become students. The challenge ? Ensure that young emerging talents appropriated photographs of elders, prolong, refute, transpose, divert, in order to work in turn.

In 2015, the “referents” were Denis Darzacq, Paolo Woods and Dorothy Smith. They have teamed up with Renault Swen, Elsa and Rebecca Topakian Leydier. In 2014, Françoise Huguier, Antoine D’Agata and Denis Rouvre interacted with Sajedeh Sharifi, Santiago Torres and Steven Daniel. In 2013, Sarah Moon, Stanley Greene and Jean-Christian Bourcart sponsored Lise Dua, Jeannie Abert and Matthew Rose.
These “conversations” have resulted in three exhibitions that were presented in 2013, in 2014 and 2015, in the prestigious Rencontres d’Arles. This winter, the Filles du Calvaire Gallery is pleased to partner in this process and to present all the images created during these three years of trading. It thus brings together eighteen photographers who participated in this unique adventure.
