L’arsenal de Brest, la mémoire enfouie

The passage of the Navy’s sail to steam in the middle of the nineteenth century requires arsenals, such as Brest, to transform. The Minister, in Paris, is informed of the military activity through the production of photographic workshops ports. Function is essentially documentary photographs taken, although the anonymous authors have benefited from the austere architecture of the arsenal to construct images of great formal rigor.
Far from the only load a nostalgic industrial urbanism disappeared, these photographs question the memory of the city and the country. Strolling through the arsenal, the man draws a map around the Penfeld, and reveals how the city is laid in the nineteenth century. This imprint inspired approach of this book, the photographs are deployed along the river from one bank to the other, to identify the different activity centers involved in the life of the arsenal.

Daniel Le Couédic
Architect and historian, professor at the University of Western Brittany, where he heads the research laboratory of the Institute of Géoarchitecture, Daniel Le Couëdic is an active member of the Institute and especially the Art and Architecture section. He is the author of several books including The architects and the idea Breton (1994), Ar Seiz Breur (1923-1947), with JY Veillard (2000) and public and urban design (2008) Art.
